The Handel Choir is an auditioned ensemble of 45 singers rehearsing on Monday evenings September through May in the Northern Baltimore area. We perform with guest professional vocal soloists and period instruments or modern instruments, depending on the repertoire. Chandos Singers is a 12-16 voice chamber ensemble drawn from the Handel Choir. Auditions for are held in the preceding April, May, July and September. Mid-season auditions are by appointment throughout the year. Please contact us if you would like to sing.

What should I expect in an audition?
Singers audition individually with the Artistic Director by appointment. You should prepare a selection that effectively demonstrates your vocal and musical ability—a folk song, hymn, patriotic song or aria are all fine. Singers will also be asked to sing vocal exercises as demonstrated, to further asses voice category and color, etc., and will sight-read a relatively simple melody and rhythm to demonstrate musicianship skills. Prior instrumental and/or vocal solo or ensemble experience is strongly recommended.

Schedule:
Handel Choir members have Monday rehearsals, Tuesday sectionals (two per concert period), and mandatory working and dress choral-orchestral rehearsals during the two weeks prior to a subscription concert. There are five subscription concert performances in 2008-2009 plus informal performances in the community.

When do rehearsals begin?
Rehearsals begin on the first Monday after Labor Day in September and, with the exception of the Christmas/New Year holidays, continue into May. For the year’s calendar contact the Choir office by email to xxx@handelchoir.org or by phone to (410) 366-6544.

Additional responsibilities:
Members are asked to support the Choir through participation on committees and by working on special projects. Each member is strongly encouraged to support the Choir through publicizing concerts and events among friends, family and associates, and by purchasing and encouraging the sale of tickets for subscription concerts.

Dues, music, concert attire:
Choir members pay annual dues of $165. Each member purchases his/her own music (at cost) and provides their own concert attire (long black for women, tuxedos for men). Need-based scholarships are available, please do not hesitate to ask.

Handel Children’s Choir Vocal Hearings:
Individual vocal hearings are held to assess each child’s readiness for ensemble participation. Our hearing process is child-friendly and consists of a simple assessment of the child’s vocal, aural and rhythmic skills. Please contact the office at (410) 366-6544 or email karen@handelchoir.org to schedule an appointment for your child.
